DeNova Homes gave the students from Orange Coast College a guided tour of their latest construction of 33 new homes in the Aura development which forms the basis of the expansion of the Costa Mesa region. Across the region, the success of Orange Coast College has attracted support and admiration from many of the leading organizations in Southern California including DeNova which invited 40 architecture students from the two-year institution to explore the two model homes created for their new development; DeNova Homes did not limit the tour the architecture students took of the development to the model homes but also included details of the construction phases of the 33 homes.

 

Orange Coast College has been at the heart of the Costa Mesa community since 1947 when a local election paved the way for the establishment of the institution. The college has built its reputation across more than half a century as a leader in the development of transfer-based courses allowing the movement of students to four-year institutions across the state of California and even to others states within the U.S.

When it comes to working inside a crowded and very dangerous prison, me and my fellow officers need all the protection that we can get. We have seen first hand how violent inmates can get if you turn your back on them for even a split second. Now add into the mix drugs and weapons, and you can see how quickly all of our lives can be on the line here. To combat these sorts of trouble, we have been using a resource that has changed the way we can protect the lives of everyone inside the jail.

Last week we heard an inmate tell his friend how he made a weapon and hid it in the yard. Even today we heard one inmate mention how he gets high in his cell at night. Each instance, we take instant action to eliminate the problem and make the jail safer for us all.

Orange Coast College – article recap

While most people are drawn to flowers because they smell good, Orange Coast College students, faculty and visitors are coming to check out a flower because of how bad it smells. The Amorphophallus titanum plant recently bloomed, a rare event that produces a rotting smell. Aptly referred to as “the corpse flower” this beautiful and endangered plant originated from the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The plant at Orange Coast College has the nickname Little Dougie, and has enjoyed its home at the college since 2006 where it has grown to a height of almost five feet, and a weight of 30 pounds. However, corpse flowers can grow to be more than 200 pounds.

 

The distinctive rotting smell is typically produced when beetles pollinate the plant. However, Little Dougie is pollinated by hand by members of the school. It is not surprising that the bloom is such a momentous occasion on the campus because it takes about a decade for a plant to make its first bloom, which lasts about 1-2 days. After that, the plant only blooms every couple of years. Since the college’s last corpse flower drew about 1,000 visitors when it bloomed in 2014, Orange Coast College set up visiting hours and a live webcam for this year’s bloom.

 

Besides it’s horticulture program, the community college in Costa Mesa, California offers education for trades, skilled professions, and licensed trades as well as transferable courses so students can continue onto California State University or University of California. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and has earned a place as one of the top transfer institutions in the country.
